Footnote: The Problem of Generation Gap
In contrast to the rest of the movies presented at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, Footnote directed by Joseph Cedar is suitable for the family view. Criticizing the egos of tenured professors and raising the issues of the generation gap and the ethical dilemma of the father and son relations, this comedy contains undeniable moral messages. However, at the same time, the raised moral issues became wonderful sources of humor for this movie.
Frankly speaking, I arrived at the Cannes Film Festival soon after deciding to buy a research paper at a cheap essay writing service. I even thought that I would not be able to concentrate on the plot lines and enjoy the movie. Still, soon after the beginning of the film, I was absorbed with the unfolded events and the dynamic development of the main characters. I shared the delight of most spectators with this film and really enjoyed its funny moments.
After viewing this movie, I had some difficulties with interpreting the title of the movie. Why Footnote? I suppose that entitling the movie in such an original way, the author expresses his criticism of the artificial limitations for the lives of the scholars who devoted al their time to the analysis of the sacred texts. According to Cedar, the only goal of their lives was to be mentioned in a footnote of certain honorable texts. A tiny footnote as the embodiment of the scholars’ lifetime dreams is an important symbol used in the plot of this comedy.
